AAPI Mural Series

In May 2023, Color Outside the Lines organized a special series of mural projects and artistic activities honoring Asian American Pacific Islander heritage month. The series featured local Asian American artists who work across a range of mediums, from large murals to fine art and digital illustration.

Asian American Artists x THPRD Mural

For the first installment of the AAPI Mural Series, we collaborated with Portland artists Alix Chiu, Jax Ko, and Anisa Asakawa, who synthesized their respective Chinese, Korean, and Malaysian American cultures to design a large-scale mural in Beaverton. Featuring colorful depictions of multi-racial and multi-generation communities, the mural aims to capture the joy of connecting with others in nature and in play.

In addition to helping the artists paint the mural, youth also had the opportunity to take lessons in Japanese calligraphy and Chinese sculpture art in an effort to expand awareness of the arts and cultures of Asia.

The project was COTL’s fourth mural collaboration with THPRD, and was made possible with additional support from the Cultural Trust of Oregon.

Bryce Wong x PPC Rock Creek Mural

For the second installment in our series highlighting AAPI artists in the Portland area, Color Outside the Lines partnered with artist and Nike footwear designer Bryce Wong to create a new mural located on the PCC Rock Creek campus in Beaverton.

A group of youth worked alongside Bryce to paint the mural and learn more about his career in art and design. All participants also created mandalas using Bryce’s unique approach to multimedia art and collage.

Unlike most of our previous mural projects, which are directly painted onto walls or panels, Bryce designed a sculptural mural painted onto a custom-cut piece of wood and installed on-site. The project was made possible with a donation of wood from Mr Plywood, assistance cutting and preparing the wood from CNC, and installation support from Moose Inc.
