The Unity Panel Project paired 24 local Portland artists with 24 foster youth. Each team worked together over the course of four months in 2019 to design and paint large art panels that are now publicly displayed at 1111 East Burnside in Portland, Oregon.
The theme of this collaborative series, “Unity,” acknowledges that we all have a responsibility to view each other with compassion, beyond reductive divisions of race, religion, gender, and socio-economic status. We believe that art and music are meaningful tools that can be used to build bridges and unite communities. Many artists involved in the Unity Project embody this project mission, and come from a broad range of racial, gender, and socio-economic backgrounds. Reflective of their diversity, each panel tells a different story and has a unique artistic style. By celebrating the beauty of multitudes, the Unity panels remind us that we are stronger together, irrespective of our differences.
In addition to highlighting the artistic talent within our community, the Unity Project provided participating youth with an opportunity to build self-confidence by creating a new mural for the city. For years to come, each child will be able to return to the prominent building their artwork is displayed on and feel a sense of pride and accomplishment that they aided in creating a truly professional work of art.We gathered to celebrate the completion of the murals at the Redd Ecotrust building on SE Salmon. The event supplied a platform for the 24 pairs of artists and youth to present their murals to the public, with several of Portland’s primary news outlets in attendance to provide media coverage. A selection of local bars and restaurants offered food and beverage items, and local musicians and DJs provided live music. The local design and fabrication studio Axiom Custom generously provided several interactive installations for guests to engage with. The event also helped raise funds for the upcoming year through a raffle to sponsor future collaborative opportunities for youth.
