“I Gave Myself Time” Mural

In 2017, Color Outside the Lines teamed up with Grammy Award-winning artist Kendrick Lamar, the artistic consultancy Branded Arts, and Rather Severe — an art practice by Travis Czekalski and Jon Stommel — to create a mural in support of Kaiser Permanente’s Find Your Words campaign, which aims to break the stigma surrounding depression and mental illness. The mural spans 4,000 square feet and wraps around the edge of a warehouse on the corner of Northeast Weidler Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Kendrick Lamar selected the words for the mural’s titular phrase, “I Gave Myself Time.” Offering further explanation, the artists say: “It’s a vulnerable but uplifting phrase that emphasizes that living with depression is a consistent effort. Healing doesn’t happen overnight, yet depression will not beat me.” The small text to the right of the mural reads: “Depression is hard to put into words.” Participating youth assisted Rather Severe in painting and adding color to the mural, providing an invaluable opportunity for youth to contribute both to beautifying the city and raising awareness about a meaningful public health campaign.
