Through a dynamic collaboration with a BIPOC youth group and local artist Christian Barrios, Color Outside the Lines facilitated the creation of a mural at Buckman Elementary School in Portland. Completed at the beginning of the school year in September 2022, this mural was a true collaboration from start to finish. We met with the youth group throughout the brainstorming process to discuss what they wanted to incorporate in the artpiece, drawing inspiration from words such as home, togetherness and joy. The students also had many great ideas that ended up in the final mural, including imagery of bridges, Mt. Hood, and the Portland skyline. Painted directly onto the back wall of the school’s gym, the students will be able to enjoy their creative work as they continue their middle school career.
